WordPerfect 6.0 Is Hot

I've always been a big supporter of WordPerfect products, and with good reason, but WordPerfect Corporation has outdone itself with it's latest flagship DOS product.

Here are my top WordPerfect 6.0 features:

  • Up to nine (9) documents can be opened at once
  • Full access to previously-created WordPerfect 5.1 documents
  • Text, graphic, and full-page editing modes
  • Mouse support
  • File management with QuickFinder, an indexed file search program
  • WordPerfect (DOS) or Windows Common User Access (CUA) keyboards
  • Shell 4.0, a top-notch menu and task management utility
  • Coaches
  • Fax capability
  • Grammar checking
  • Automatic envelopes & barcodes

WordPerfect 6.0 allows up to nine separate documents to be open at the same time. You can hold last month's trip itinerary in document 1 while you are creating this month's itinerary in document 2. You can copy and paste between the two documents. All while you have seven other memos open! Don't you wish you could keep track of nine documents in your head?

All of your WordPerfect 5.1 documents will correctly import into WordPerfect 6.0. You don't have to reformat each one.

You can now edit in the standard text mode, as you have been doing in WordPerfect 5.1, or you may edit in full What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) graphic editing mode. There's even a full-page graphic editing mode!

WordPerfect 6.0 correctly uses your mouse for cursor placement and text selection. A triple-click will select your current sentence, and a quadruple-click will select your entire paragraph. Let's hear it for easy mouse work!

The QuickFinder helps you locate your documents fast! You create the specific indices to search the directories that hold your files. You then set the criteria, and WordPerfect quickly lists the files that meet your criteria. Now it's a simple matter to list all the documents you've written to Columbia Business Journal!

You may continue to use your standard WordPerfect keyboard editing and movement commands, the function keys work just about as you're used to. But, if you're also using Windows software, you may select the Windows CUA keyboard. Now you don't have to memorize two sets of function key commands!

Shell 4.0 is a powerful menu program. It also allows you to task switch between running programs. You can open a WordPerfect document, and switch to your favorite calendar, spreadsheet, or database program without closing WordPerfect! Then you can switch back to WordPerfect, and your cursor returns to the exact point that you left!

Version 6.0 has 639 changes or enhancements. One of the most popular enhancements is Coaches. WordPerfect Corporation has spent a lot of effort creating the “Coaches” feature of the on-line help system. Each coach contains “show me” and “coach me” options. Show me tells you how to use the feature. Coach me actually guides you through each step of the process.

If you have a fax/modem installed in your computer, you can use WordPerfect to send and receive faxes directly. All of your fonts and type settings will print on the receiving fax machine—just as if you sent your document from a traditional fax machine!

If your grammar leaves something to be desired, then leave it to WordPerfect! The grammar checker checks for misspelled words, capitalization errors, incoherent sentences, unbalanced quotations or parentheses, the words “I” and “me” used incorrectly, and double negatives.

WordPerfect 6.0 can create an envelope from an existing letter without running a complicated macro. 6.0 finds the address in your letter, inserts it on to the envelope, and creates a corresponding barcode.

6.0 can even create an envelope for each record in a mail merge!

The United States Postal Service (USPS) instituted the new 11-digit delivery point barcode system on March 21st of this year. This replaces the familiar ZIP+4 system that has been with us for the last few years. WordPerfect 6.0 includes a barcode option that prints the graphic barcode based on your 11-digit address ZIP code. By printing your own barcode, you'll ensure the fastest possible delivery of your mail!

While we're talking about USPS standards, here are two publications that can make your mailings go more smoothly: USPS Publication #28, Postal Addressing Standards, which is available at your local post office, and Domestic Mail Manual, which is available from the US Government Printing Office, 941 N Capitol St, NE, Washington, DC 20402-9371, (202) 275-3054.

Good luck with WordPerfect 6.0, let me know how you like it!
