Step-by-Step Configuration Instructions

A more complete technical support area for RideWay is under development. You're welcome to enter the area, but please excuse any incomplete links or HTML errors.

First Things First
Before following these instructions make sure

  1. the Server PC has a modem and Dial-Up Networking installed
  2. the Dial-Up Networking on the Server PC can connect to your ISP (Internet Service Provider)
  3. you can browse the Internet from the Server PC

RideWay must be run on a Windows 95/98 or Windows NT4 PC. A Network Interface Card (LAN Card) must be installed on the RideWay Server PC, and the LAN must properly operate the TCP/IP protocol. You may have already installed the IPX/SPX or NetBEUI protocols, these won't affect RideWay's operation.

1. Configuring TCP/IP For the Server PC
On a Windows 95/98 PC:

  1. Click Start
  2. Click Settings
  3. Click Control Panel
  4. Double-Click Network

Under the "Configuration" tab, check if TCP/IP is installed. If "TCP/IP" appears somewhere in "The following network components are installed" box, then it is installed. Otherwise follow these steps to install TCP/IP software.

  1. Click Add
  2. Click Protocol
  3. Click Add
  4. Select Manufacturers
  5. Click Microsoft
  6. Click TCP/IP
  7. Click OK

You should now be brought back to the "Configuration" tab.

  1. Click TCP/IP->your LAN Card
  2. Click Properties

When the TCP/IP properties for the LAN card appear,

  1. Click IP Address
  2. Click Specify an IP address
  3. Enter IP Address 192.168.1.1
  4. Enter Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
  5. Click DNS Configuration
  6. Click Disable DNS
  7. Click OK

You should now be brought back to the "Configuration" tab.

  1. Click TCP/IP->Dial-Up adapter
  2. Click Properties
  3. Click IP Address
  4. Click Obtain an IP address automatically
  5. Click OK twice

Windows 95/98 will now tell you that "You must restart your computer before the new settings will take effect.

2. Installing RideWay on the Server PC
Before installing RideWay on the Server PC make sure there is no previous version of RideWay installed. If there is a version of RideWay already installed you should uninstall it first. Otherwise the newly installed RideWay may not be able to operate properly. Follow these instructions to check if a version of RideWay is currently installed.

    From Control Panel,
  1. Double-Click Add/Remove Programs Under the Install/Uninstall tab,
  2. Check to see if RideWay is listed

Previous versions of RideWay must be uninstalled before installing the current version.

If RideWay is listed, please uninstall it by:

  1. Click RideWay ...
  2. Click Add/Remove
    Under Confirm File Deletion,
  3. Click Yes

To install RideWay using Explorer:

  1. Double-Click rideway-setup.exe
  2. Follow the instructions presented to you during the RideWay installation.

To start RideWay

    On the desktop,
  1. Click Start
  2. Click Programs
  3. Click RideWay ...
  4. Click RideWay

The RideWay main screen should read,
RideWay Dialer is not connected
RideWay Server is not running

To set up RideWay

  1. Click Dialer
  2. Click Dialer Control... In Default Connection,
  3. Select the Dial-Up Networking entry for your ISP Under Redial,
  4. Set your preferences If you want to use "On-demand dialing," check the box and set your preferences. "On-demand dialing" allows your client PCs to send requests for the Server PC to initiate a connection when the Server PC is not connected to your ISP.
  5. Click OK

Back at the RideWay main screen,

  1. Click Server
  2. Click Server Control You need to enter the DNS Servers provided by your ISP. If you do not have them, please contact your ISP and request the IP addresses of your DNS servers.
  3. Click Add
  4. Enter DNS server IP address
  5. Click OK

If you have more than one available DNS IP address, add it also.

To return to the main RideWay screen:

  1. Click OK
  2. Click Server
  3. Click Start

The RideWay screen will update and read:
The RideWay Server is running


3. Configuring TCP/IP for Client PCs
On a Windows 95/98 PC client,

  1. Click Start
  2. Click Settings
  3. Click Control Panel
  4. Double-Click Network

Under the "Configuration" tab, check if TCP/IP is installed. If "TCP/IP" appears somewhere in "The following network components are installed" box, then it is installed. Otherwise follow these steps to install TCP/IP software.

  1. Click Add
  2. Click Protocol
  3. Click Add Under Manufacturers,
  4. Click Microsoft
  5. Click TCP/IP
  6. Click OK

You should now be brought back to the "Configuration" tab.

  1. Click TCP/IP->your LAN Card
  2. Click Properties

When the TCP/IP properties for the LAN card appears,

  1. Click IP Address
  2. Click Specify an IP address
    In IP Address,
  3. Enter 192.168.1.2 for the first client PC, 192,168.1.3 for the second Client PC, and so on.
    In Subnet Mask,
  4. Enter 255.255.255.0 (this is the same for all client PCs)
  5. Click DNS Configuration
  6. Click Enable DNS
    In Host,
  7. Enter a unique name for this client PC In Domain,
  8. Enter a domain name for this network
    In DNS Server Search Order,
  9. Enter 192.168.1.1
  10. Click Add
  11. Click OK twice

Windows 95/98 will now tell you that "You must restart your computer before the new settings will take effect. Restart your PC.


4. Configuring Browsers for Client PCs
Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0

  1. Start Internet Explorer 4.0
  2. Click View
  3. Click Internet Options
  4. Click Connection
  5. Click Connect to the Internet using a local area network
    Under Proxy Server,
  6. Select Access the Internet using a proxy server
  7. Click Advanced
    In the box next to Socks:,
  8. Enter 192.168.1.1
    In the Port dialogue,
  9. Enter 1080

    Only enter data in the Socks: and its associated Port dialogue windows. Leave all other boxes empty. Make sure that the box that says "Use the same proxy server for all protocols" is NOT checked.

  10. Click OK twice

Netscape Navigator 4.0

  1. Start Netscape Navigator 4.0
  2. Click Edit
  3. Click Preferences...
  4. Double-Click Advanced
  5. Click Proxies
  6. Click Manual proxy configuration
  7. Click View
    In the box next to Socks:,
  8. Enter 192.168.1.1
    In the Port dialogue,
  9. Enter 1080

    Only enter data in the Socks: and its associated Port dialogue windows. Leave all other boxes empty.

  10. Click OK twice
