hi, either your ram is not pushed in all the way, check that first.
the cord isnt pushed in all the way in the hard drive.
(u didnt mention how many hard drives cd-roms ect)
if you are using just one cd-rom and one hard drive try changing the cords around...
see the red line on the cord? its supposed to be beside the power jack on the device not on the other side of it, some cables as well have little notches so that u cant get that wrong.
either way if u put the ide cables in wrong it will not mess up the computer at the least, all it will do is beep.
also you could check your bios settings, sipmly make it auto detect the hard drives instead of manually.
one of these ways should work for this is more or less everything u can do.
if u are using a 486 a large hard drive simply wont work on it, i believe its 1.7 gig max
