I have the same model w/WinME and it works fine.
I was concerned that it came with ME as I have not heard good things about it and was considering loading Win98 or 2K, but so far I am very happy with it. I would suspect Win ME more than HP's hardware. Try installing Win98 and see if problems resolve.
