I was not hit personally by the Chernobyl (CIH) virus myself but one of my clients was. He called me that Monday and asked why his machine was freezing up on SCANDISK. I walked him through several steps over the phone and nothing fixed the problem. Well I went over to his house the day after and started up the computer and it ran SCANDISK fine and booted normally. I then install Norton AV5 and found the CIH virus. I cleaned out the virus and he was all set. All I could figure out is that on boot a feature in his BIOS called Trend BIOS Antivirus (that is not the correct name but close enough for those who have seen it or used it) was enabled. Well I don't quite know the entire dynamics of the virus but some how this feature wouldn't allow the virus to delete, rewrite, or whatever it does. My clients computer ran great the day after without doing anything to the system. The virus didn't strike of course on Tuesday since it was the 27th. All I really want to say is that it may be a good idea to enable Trend if you have it, it may save you some day.
