My 'puter got struck with CIH. I got a new motherboard (I had wanted to upgrade anyway, jumped at the chance), then tried to get my hard drive working. Before I knew there were recovery programs on the way, I did fdisk /mbr because I'd heard it could help you get it working again. It allowed me to log onto the drive but of course my stuff wasn't there and it says invalid media type when I try to do anything. Yesterday I tried mrecover.exe and it said that it could not find any recoverable FAT32 partitions. I am almost positive it was FAT32 formatted. So did I overwrite any hope when I did fdisk /mbr (formatting the master boot record)? Or is the master boot record separate and the 2nd copy of the FAT hanging out somewhere on the drive?
I almost reformatted the whole drive yesterday, but I didn't have the heart to do it. I am hoping that the freeware CIH recovery described in this site - http://www.grc.com/cih.htm - that is under development will fix my computer. Hopefully it will come out soon. Anyone know what my chances of recovery are? BTW, the data on the drive is not critical, it will be an inconvenience if I do not get it back.
Thanks in advance for any ideas...
