I had a friend that ran into the CIH virus and have been trying to piece
together his machine and have finally found the solutions. He got hit
by it in both aspects, the BIOS and the Boot Sector. Here's what I
found. and how I fixed my friends machine.
A comp sci student in Dhaka U created and released as freeware to the
internet, a fix for the Boot Sector part of the virus that worked on my
friends machine. It is called MRECOVER and the author of the program is
Monirul Islam Sharif (http://members.xoom.com/_XOOM/monirdomain/). This
fixed that part.
The BIOS fix was a little more involved however, I had to get the flash
utility and basically go to a machine that worked, ran the flash utility
and got to the point right before it rewrote the flash bios. I then
pulled the working bios chip and put in the hosed bios chip and told it
to rewrite it.
This worked for me and I just wanted to pass on some info so people know
there is an alternative to spending the $300 for the Ontrack software.
