I made a deal with a client to use him as a test for a Win98 upgrade. He was on Win3.1
I decided to wipe the drive, and do a full Win98/Fat32 install. All seemed to be going well until the restart and finalizing hardware. After what seems to be a good boot, it crashes with a windows protection error in device ConfigMG. System restarts into Safe mode when restarted (as instructed). A reboot after safe mode ends up locked again, safe mode, locked - cycle forever.
Phone support from Microsoft had me try disabling everything but boot drive still locked up. 4 hours of phone support left me no farther down the road.
Wiping the drive and a full install of Win95B went perfect. All devices accounted for and working fine.
A Win98 upgrade over Win95B ends up locked, safe mode, locked, etc.
At least the Win98 Uninstall put Win95B back to running fine...
This motherboard has onboard Cirrus video and possibly a (disabled) network chip. I wonder if Win98 is finding the disabled net chip and having an emotional problem.
Any suggestions would be welcome.
Best Win98 joke I've heard so far:
Type WIN to shut down your system...
