I'm relatively new on the Internet & not sure
exactly what constitutes "spam". Unsolicited
advertising whether it be email or US Mail, is a
fact of life. Businesses could not exist without
it. As a "net" business, I know that it takes a
combination of search engine registration, classified
ad placement and targeted email in order to successfully
market a product. And, we are all in business to
be successful. However, such advertising should
be done with taste & consideration. It is unfort-
unate that there are those that will abuse the
system -- but there always have been & always will
be. I would not like to see legitimate businesses
penalized for the actions of these few.

Therefore, I do not believe any regulations or laws
should be passed that totally prohibit unsolicited
email advertising. However, obvious controls and/or
limitations are needed:

1. Unsolicited email should be restricted
as to length (I automatically discard,
without reading, anything over one-page
long)
2. Multiple messages to the same email
address need to be prohibited. (Again,
I automatically trash these messages
without reading them)
3. Require that all email messages contain
a legitimate email return address,
removal instructions or a statement that
this is a one-time only message.
4. It has been my experience that MLM
promoters are the best examples of email
abuse. Most of their messages are far
too lengthy, are total hype, contain
no significant information, are vague
at best as to what the program entails
and lead you to an 800 number recording
or a website that is as equally vague.
Cleaning up this particular group could
go a long way towards improving unsolicited
email advertising.

If the new bill addresses all of these issues, without
infringing on legitimate, tasteful, unsolicitated
email advertising, I'm all for it!!!!
