SCO to Invoice Linux Users

The SCO Group plans to send invoices this month to companies using Linux, the open source operating system that's popular with IT professionals and computer-savvy users. Initial pricing starts at $699 for a single-processor Linux server.

As obnoxious as this sounds, invoicing is less onerous than legal action, and it demonstrates SCO's commitment to protecting its intellectual property. Invoices will be sent to commercial Linux users who have discussed their Linux work publicly.

Recently, SCO sued IBM for $3 billion over the issue of misappropriated UNIX code. Big Blue countersued, and Red Hat, a leading Linux distributor got in the fray by also taking legal action against SCO.

Whew, you'd think we'd all learn from Microsoft's legal travails. Guys, get a life!
