Life Sentences for Computer Hackers

by Dave Murphy
ISSN 1535-3613

Dave Murphy, DGL President & ITrain founder The House of Representatives yesterday passed a bill, 385 to 3, that includes a provision for life imprisonment for malicious computer hackers (crackers). The bill expands the investigative authority of police to conduct Internet and telephone eavesdropping without obtaining a court order. Called the Cyber Security Enhancement Act (CSEA), the legislation responds to cyber-terrorism, including DOS (Denial of Service) attacks.

The CSEA also includes provisions that will revise sentencing guidelines for computer crimes, and formalize the National Infrastructure Protection Center.

Dave's Opinion

CSEA, H.R. 3482 is the broadest crime bill I can recall. It's now headed for the Senate, and I haven't heard that there will be any problem getting the bill passed there.

This is a bill worth following, and I've included a link to more information below.
