Windows XP Service Pack 1Microsoft updates and fixes its flagship operating system
Windows XP Update Gets Testedby Dave MurphyISSN 1535-3613
WinXP SP1 introduces four options for managing, customizing or removing Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, Windows Media Player, Windows Messenger, Microsoft's version of the Java Virtual Machine, and other applications that were written by competitors. SP1 also introduces support for new technologies--such as Mira "smart" display devices, Tablet PCs and the Freestyle digital media interface.
Dave's OpinionIn addition to adding new features and fixing a few bugs, WinXP SP1's greatest service is its option to allow users to remove Microsoft's middleware applications: Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, etc. These applications are some of the most popular applications in their class; however, that's because they came for free with Windows. Most competent technical users report these applications are bloated, slow bug-ridden targets for crackers and other digital malcontents. It's about time that all users had the option to successfully install and operate the middleware applications of their choice.
