Uniform LinuxOne industry standard for all
UnitedLinux -Linux Standardization Effortby Dave MurphyISSN 1535-3613
In today's announcement, Caldera International Inc., SuSE Linux AG, Conectiva S.A. and Turbolinux Inc. along with more than a dozen other hardware and software vendors joined the promise to deliver a standardized version of Linux by the end of the year. Also joining in the announcement were IBM, HP, AMD. and Intel. The dominant Linux distributor, Red Hat, didn't join the announcement, leading to speculation that the joint plans include delivering a uniform version of Linux to compete with Red Hat; however, the four charter UnitedLinux partners insist that the joint project is open to all Linux distributors. By standardizing the operating system, UnitedLinux members anticipate that software vendors would have fewer incompatibilities amongst the Linux versions and IS staff will be able to focus their proficiency on a industry standard package.
Dave's OpinionThis is a mighty effort. There is a lot of money at stake here, and the partners are individually lead by some very big egos. I'd like to see a uniform core Linux release; however, I'm not sure these players will get along nicely in the long run.
