New Battery Technology To Benefit Laptops & Cell Phones

by Dave Murphy
ISSN 1535-3613

Dave Murphy, DGL President & ITrain founder Valence Technology, Inc. has announced a new type of Lithium-ion battery that promises greater chemical stability and significantly longer energy service. The new phosphate-based Saphion technology possesses safety characteristics that are superior other cathode materials currently used in Lithium-ion batteries. According to Valence, Saphion technology is superior because of its exceptional thermal and chemical stability which capitalizes on the energy density and efficiency of Lithium-ion with a number of added benefits, including excellent cost/performance characteristics.

Saphion technology systems reportedly do not exhibit the "memory effect" of Nickel-Cadmium and Nickel-metal Hydride solutions. The battery systems can be used in a variety of popular configurations and can be manufactured to fit small applications, but its lower cost opens the door to market development for large cells.

Dave's Opinion

A better battery? A better mousetrap. Every laptop and cell phone owner I know wants more battery time. I'll keep my eye on this company and its new energy system. If it works as advertised, we'll soon see laptops with 10 hour batteries and cell phones that offer a week's worth of talk time, not just standby time.
