Dell Supports DVD+RW Standard

by Dave Murphy
ISSN 1535-3613

Dave Murphy, DGL President & ITrain founder Dell Computer announced that it will begin shipping later this year systems that include DVD rewritable drives using the DVD+RW standard.

Just like the battle between the technically superior Betamax and the better-marketed VHS standard 20 years ago, the DVD rewritable drive market is fractured by competing standards. The three leading standards are: DVD+RW, DVD-R, and DVD-RAM. They're not compatible, so the market will let one win out to the exclusion of the others.

Dave's Opinion

Rewritable DVDs make IS managers salivate. DVDs have a potential storage capacity of 9GB per double-sided disk, and they're same compact size as CDs.

HP, Sony, and Phillips Electronics comprise the foundation of the DVD+RW Alliance. With their market presence and Dell's distribution power, it looks like DVD+RW may win out. That is if the drives are available in great enough quantity.

Other DVD+RW Alliance members include Dell, Mitsubishi Chemical, Ricoh, Thomson Multimedia and Yamaha.

I love our Ricoh and Yamaha CD-RW drives. So I'm looking forward to a DVD rewritable standard that will let us backup our network servers easily. I might even start transferring to DVD our 8mm and VHS video tapes we've taken of our children. The shelf life of DVD is much longer than tape.
