DDoS Attack Against CERT

by Dave Murphy
ISSN 1535-3613

Dave Murphy, DGL President & ITrain founder The organization responsible for warning Internet users about security threats has been hit by a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack that limited access to its site.

The DDoS attack started Tuesday morning. DDoS attacks are initiated from a single control point that then instigates multiple, sometimes hundreds or thousands, of computers under a degree of control to send bogus information packets to a single receiver. The traffic forces system overloads and takes the target offline.

CERT, known for its security advisories, said it has alternate ways to issue security alerts if necessary. CERT worked with various organizations, including ISPs, to investigate and stop the attack.
