64-Bit WindowsThat's a shade faster than before.
64-Bit Windows Coming in Octoberby Dave MurphyISSN 1535-3613
Current 32-bit operating systems (OSes) are limited to 4GB of memory without kludges. OS's that use 64-bit addressing can use up to over 18 Petabytes (over 18,000 TB) of memory. My desktop PC already has 512MB (half a gigabyte) of RAM, and I"m looking forward to installing a new desktop unit this fall that measures its RAM in gigabytes. And I expect this will be the standard within two years. The release of 64-bit Windows is good news for Intel, it will drive some tech heads over to the Itanium chip. AMD, Intel's major competitor, doesn't yet have a 64-bit CPU in its product lineup.
