Web Searches By The MillionsPeer-to-peer technology grows up
Peer-To-Peer Web Searchesby Dave MurphyISSN 1535-3613
The Seattle company's Pandango search system combines peer-to-peer networking technology with collaborative filtering. It's like a traditional search engine on steroids. Similar to the file-sharing software applications Gnutella and Napster, Pandango searches for information that's shared by other users. Except rather than sharing binary or mp3 files, it shares webpages. By searching and filtering the most popular webpages, the Pandango software determines the most suitable search responses. Millions of users, who each keep their indices updated, provide more accurate search results, compared to traditional search engines -- or so say Pandango's creators. I'm interested in reviewing i5 Digital's application when it's available. Initially, I'm concerned about user privacy; because sites we visit are indexed by our web browsers and the Pandango application, will that facilitate tracking the site's I've visited and releasing that information to unauthorized parties?
