Kopernicus Aims To Make Linux GUI Easy

by Dave Murphy
ISSN 1535-3613

Dave Murphy, DGL President & ITrain founder The KDE Team has released the long-awaited Version 2.0 of the K Desktop Environment. KDE2, aka Kopernicus, makes Linux more accessible to Windows users.

Kopernicus includes some cool apps:

  1. Konqueror, a web browser and file manager
  2. KOffice, a suite of desktop applications
  3. KParts component object tools
  4. more than 100 applications for games, graphics, administration, and utilities

The primary feature for home and business users is KOffice, the suite of office applications. It consists of:

  1. KSpread, a spreadsheet
  2. KIllustrator, a vector drawing app
  3. KWord, a frame-based word processor
  4. KPresenter, a presentation app
  5. KChart, a charting and diagramming app

I'm not sure I can handle all the "K"s, but I do like KDE interface. It's straight forward, and it's a breeze to learn.

KDE's Kopernicus is an alternative to GNOME (GNU Network Object Model Environment), another popular Linux Graphical User Interface.

The Kopernicus source is available for free download. Precompiled binaries are available for a variety of Linux distributions, including Caldera OpenLinux, Debian, Mandrake, Red Hat, and SuSE.
