Microsoft Discounts Windows Me

Microsoft announced today that it will sell upgrade copies of Windows Me (Millennium Edition) for $59.95 through January 15, 2001. This is a $30 discount from the previous prices of Windows 95/98. The full price of WinMe is expected to be $109 for the upgrade and $209 for a new installation. The product will be available September 14th.

Microsoft's sales of Win98 have been disappointing at best. Microsoft has earned about $350 million on it's top-line consumer operating system.

The pre-release discount announcement may be a result of pressure Microsoft is receiving as part of it's federal monopoly trial and the 60 class-action and 130 private lawsuits it's facing related to price gouging
