V-ONE: First to Offer Secure VPN on Linux

by Dave Murphy
ISSN 1535-3613

Dave Murphy, DGL President & ITrain founder V-ONE, a startup security company, based in Germantown, Maryland, announced the release of SmartGate for Linux.

This is the first Virtual Private Networking (VPN) product to offer both client and server support for Linux. The product has been released to support Red Hat Linux version 6.0.

Following is V-ONE's press release on this new product, released a short while ago. V-ONE Corporation (Nasdaq: VONE), a leading provider of client/server Virtual Private Networks (VPN), today announced the availability of SmartGate for Linux, the first VPN product to ship with both client and server support for Linux. V-ONE's award-winning SmartGateVPN provides this compatibility with Red Hat Inc.'s (Nasdaq: RHAT) Red Hat Linux version 6.0.

By providing a VPN with Linux server and client support, SmartGate strengthens its position as the industry's most flexible VPN product.SmartGate is the only VPN that works in Microsoft Corp.'s (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows CE handheld and palm-sized computing environments. SmartGate also offers compatibility with a wide variety of authentication methods such as smart cards, digital certificates, and virtual and third-party tokens such as SecurID from RSA Security Inc. (Nasdaq: RSAS.) In addition, V-ONE's Air SmartGate is the only solution that provides authentication and encryption to wireless messaging devices such as two-way pagers.

"The growth of Linux as an enterprise solution has made clear the need for Linux compatibility at both ends of the VPN and we're pleased that SmartGate is the first to market with such a solution," said David D. Dawson, CEO of V-ONE Corporation. "The fact that we are already shipping to customers will continue to maximize our success with the large and expanding Linux enterprise community."

SmartGate joins V-ONE's InstantExtranet Server (IXS) in the company's line of Linux-compatible products. IXS was unveiled in September 1999 to enable virtually any size organization to immediately benefit from e-business. Based on a hardened version of Red Hat Linux version 6.0, IXS automatically installs with seamlessly integrated VPN security from V-ONE, providing software for public and private Web servers, a secure e-mail server and public and private FTP servers in one simple package. IXS features matchless ease of installation (auto-executing in less than 30 minutes) along with attractive pricing (V-ONE's introductory offer provides IXS for 15 end users for $995.) The product is especially attractive to organizations without the technical resources required to implement many conventional VPN solutions and ISPs seeking to provide secure application hosting to their customers.

With today's availability announcement, SmartGate extends to the Linux community the same easy-deploying VPN functionality that non-Linux SmartGate customers have previously enjoyed. SmartGate's patented On-Line Registration (OLR) process requires only a simple user download to deploy the client software, allowing a virtually unlimited number of users to be VPN-enabled quickly. The centralized user management of SmartGate permits both the easy addition of more clients and automatic updates of user access permissions. SmartGate's integrated strong authentication includes two complementary approaches -- two-factor authentication, where the user is required to possess an authentication token unique to them and to know their access code, and mutual authentication, where both the client and server challenge each other to ensure communications are authorized. This authentication permits organizations to tightly manage the access privileges afforded each user. SmartGate also offers Triple DES (Digital Encryption Standard) encryption which has unique export approval from the U.S. government for global use with customer-controlled encryption keys.
