AOL Releases Instant Messenger (AIM) 3.0

Dave Murphy, DGL President & ITrain founder America Online today released the latest version of its AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), version 3.0. AIM now has over 45 million registered users.

New features in AIM 3.0 include:

  • AIM News Ticker and AIM Stock Ticker
  • Simplified chat navigation between aol.com chat rooms and AIM
  • Buddy icons representing users
  • Auto-reconnect that detects brief lapses in the user's connection and keeps AIM running

AOL and Microsoft are in a heated battle over the inability of their respective instant messaging software to communicate. Each time Microsoft has issued software to allow communication, AOL has blocked its use with AIM. Both companies have publicly called for an instant-messaging standard that will address compatibility issues.

Currently, AIM offers compatibility with AOL's own CompuServe Internet service and with IBM's Lotus Notes and Sametime, and also with products by Apple, EarthLink Network, Juno Online Services, MindSpring Enterprises, Netscape, Novell, and RealNetworks.

Surprisingly, the most popular instant messaging software, ICQ (I Seek You), also owned by AOL, doesn't work with AIM.

In a recent survey of visitors to our websites, ICQ stands out as the way-in-front leader. The rankings as of last week are:

  1. ICQ: 62%
  2. AIM: 16%
  3. Yahoo: 14%
  4. MSN: 9%
