AOL's latest jab at Microsoft
AOL Releases Instant Messenger (AIM) 3.0
New features in AIM 3.0 include:
AOL and Microsoft are in a heated battle over the inability of their respective instant messaging software to communicate. Each time Microsoft has issued software to allow communication, AOL has blocked its use with AIM. Both companies have publicly called for an instant-messaging standard that will address compatibility issues. Currently, AIM offers compatibility with AOL's own CompuServe Internet service and with IBM's Lotus Notes and Sametime, and also with products by Apple, EarthLink Network, Juno Online Services, MindSpring Enterprises, Netscape, Novell, and RealNetworks. Surprisingly, the most popular instant messaging software, ICQ (I Seek You), also owned by AOL, doesn't work with AIM.
