Microsoft Releases MSN Messenger Service
by Dave Murphy
ISSN 1535-3613

Dave Murphy, DGL President & ITrain founder Microsoft today released MSN Messenger Service, that let's MSN users send instant messages to one another and users of the competing AOL Instant Messenger.

Microsoft drew much criticism because users of its instant messaging system can send and receive messages with AOL users: Microsoft's product is the first to break the parochial barrier in a big way. And Microsoft users can tell when their pals are online, even if they're using AOL's messaging system -- but the reverse is not true.

With MSN Messenger Service, you can:

  • See when your friends are online -- whether they use MSN Messenger Service or AOL Instant Messenger.
  • Send and receive instant messages in real time with one or more of your friends.
  • Enjoy easy-to-follow exchanges by being able to tell when someone in the conversation is typing.
  • Easily control who can see when you're online and who can send you instant messages.
  • Be automatically notified when you receive new messages in your Hotmail e-mail account.
  • See when your friends are online and send them an instant message using Outlook Express 5.

MSN Messenger Service 1.0 is currently available for Windows 95/98/NT4. A Mac version will be released shortly.

The new software is available on MSN's website.

What do you think? Will you use MSN's new Messenger Service? Or do you prefer AOL's? Or are you like me, an avid ICQ user? Give me your thoughts on the message center.
