ICQ Calls Offline Users For Chat
by Dave Murphy
ISSN 1535-3613

Dave Murphy, DGL President & ITrain founder Israeli-based communications firm NECS is giving ICQ users a way to find their buddies even when they aren't connected to the Internet.

With this product, an ICQ user can invite an offline ICQ user to come online to chat.

A telephone icon next to names in the user's ICQ list denotes those who are offline. Double-clicking the icon sends a command to ping the offline user's modem to display a message on the remote screen - in effect, a "come out and play" invitation.

NECS also is planning to launch versions of Signaler designed for the AOL Instant Messenger and Yahoo Pager, two other services in the hot online instant-communication market.

The Signaler site describes the product as follows: the first version of the Signaler software is adjusted to support the ICQ messaging system. Applying the Signaler Service to your ICQ software will upgrade your messaging exchange as follows:

An Offline Ringer To Your ICQ: If you have a phone connected to your modem, you will hear a short ring notifying you (and the software) that you have a message. A few seconds later you will hear a second ring, notifying who the message is from - an ICQ window will pop up with the name of the person that is contacting/waiting for you for chat.

Please recommend your friends to install it as well, so you will be able to call him/her off line.

Unique Indication To Your Buddies: Any ICQ user who has your name on his/her buddy list will have a unique indication that you can be contacted even when you are offline (little yellow phone icon).

Saves Time And Money: Save yourself the need for the expensive and annoying phone calls every time you wish to coordinate a chat with an ICQ buddy who is offline.

Offline Email Notification: Receive ICQ Email notifications without an Internet connection.

Using your Modem and your own phone line, the SIGNALER Software enables your ICQ to remain active even when you have disconnected from the Internet.

What do you think? Are you an ICQ user? AOL Instant Messenger? Yahoo Pager? What's your take on the Signaler app? Leave your comments on the Message Center.
