Big Names Back Linux
by Dave Murphy
ISSN 1535-3613

Dave Murphy, DGL President & ITrain founder Dell Computer may soon announce a program that will make it easier for Information Technology buyers to get Dell workstations with Linux as the installed OS, instead of Microsoft's Windows NT.

Dell currently bundles Windows NT as a standard feature on its workstations. Dell already offers network servers with Linux preinstalled; however, it charges an $249.

Hewlett-Packard also announced a plan today that will install Red Hat Linux on the some models of the HP NetServer line of computers. Again, these are computers that would have normally shipped with Windows NT installed. HP is also developing a program with Red Hat to make it easier for corporate customers to both acquire and maintain their Linux-based hardware.

Linux has been gaining market share in the Intel server market over the past year, partly because it is much cheaper than Windows NT. The complete Linux software package is free, and can be downloaded from many sites on the Internet. Red Hat's version of Linux, complete with printed manuals and installation program costs less that $35 at beyond.com. can cost $50, while Microsoft's Windows NT can run up to $750 per seat.
