Windows 98 Gets Y2K Bug Fix
by Dave Murphy
ISSN 1535-3613
Users of Microsoft's Windows 98 operating system should download the free Year 2000 (Y2K) upgrade that will correct infrequent, but annoying, glitches. The Y2K bugs were recently discovered, and Microsoft will notify registered Win98 users via email.
Here's a short list of the Win98 Y2K bugs:
Date rollover
PCs booted as the date rolls over may display an inaccurate time or date.
Date/Time
If the date were set to February 29th of a leap year and the user changes years with the control arrows, February may display 29 days even in non-leap years.
Dialer Log
When a user makes a phone call using the Phone Dialer applet, the log file displays the year of the call incorrectly.
DOS XCOPY
XCOPY run in real mode using the /D:date switch does not accept 2-digit year dates except between 80 and 99. XCOPY run within a window accepts 2-digit year dates with in the 20th century only.
Java Virtual Machine
Some year-2000 problems occur in the Sun Microsystems Java Development Kit (versions 1.1.1 to 1.1.5), involving date functions that truncate the year to two digits.
Microsoft Wallet
When entering credit-card information in Microsoft Wallet 2.0 or earlier versions, users must enter the month, day, and year for expiration dates beyond 2000 or data may be parsed incorrectly.
Regional Settings Date/Time Picker
If Regional Settings in the Control Panel is set to use 2-digit years, then the Date/Time Picker function may not return the proper date.
