Microsoft to Alert for Critical Updates

Microsoft Windows 98 includes a "Windows Update" feature on the main start menu. This option allows the user to connect directly to Microsoft's update webpage to download patches and improvements to the Win98 operating system.

Next week, Microsoft will take a proactive role by notifying a user of "critical updates," those patches that affect security and serious bug fixes, as soon as the user logs onto the Internet.

The procedure will require users to subscribe to the Windows Critical Update service.
