Infoseek Releases Meta-Search App
by Dave Murphy
ISSN 1535-3613

Dave Murphy, DGL President & ITrain founder There's not many areas as competitive as discount long distance telephone service, maybe professional soccer, but the web portal market is giving both of these other markets a run for their money. Latest out of the gate is Infoseek with it's Go Network deal with Disney and it's meta-search program called Infoseek Express.

Infoseek Express is a free app that automatically searches Infoseek, Yahoo, Excite, and other search engines from a single query command. It works with Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer web browsers. The results of the searches are saved to the user's computer for faster navigation amongst the sites.

DGL awarded a "Must Have" citation to WebFerret, the best meta-search tool we've seen to date. We're looking forward to a complete test drive of Infoseek Express. If it's half as good as the initial details portray, we may have to rethink our WebFerret recommendation.

Our first concern, though, is that Infoseek Express software can strain computing power. It's a Java app that runs alongside the browser. And the recommended minimum RAM configuration is 32MB. While 32MB is paltry with new systems, it's still a lot for most home users who are in the second or third year of owning their computer.

Check the Infoseek website for more details.
