Microsoft readies major software upgrade
Microsoft Readies Office 98 for Macs
A Word 97-98 converter is available for users of Word 5.1 and 6.x so they may open and edit documents created in the newer version of the word processor program. Office 98 Mac Edition will use the same file format as Office 97 for Windows 95/NT to allow offices with both platforms to share data files. Office 98 will also open files created in previous versions of Office, both PC and Mac versions. To encourage users of Office 4.2 Mac Edition to upgrade, the New Office 98 will have a more Mac-like interface and Word 98 will combine the new Mac interface with the menu structure of the popular Word 5.1. This will help Mac users transition to the new product. The release of Office 98 Mac Edition is the first major sign of Microsoft's commitment to the platform since its $150 million investment in Apple Computer earlier this year.
