Exchange vs. Outlook 97 by Dave Murphy ISSN 1535-3613
The combination can bring network and application performance to a crawl. The Outlook 97 client overwrites system registry entries that are also used by Exchange, thereby causing a conflict. If users attempt to return to Exchange, Outlook must also be open for access to forms such as new mail messages and schedule screens. Outlook 97, which ships with Microsoft Office 97 is generally intended to be a replacement for Exchange; however, many organization have standardized on Exchange as the messaging system because not all stations are concurrently upgraded to Office 97. Microsoft has released a beta utility, Forms Fix, which allows users to automatically switch between the two programs, Exchange & Outlook, with out impacting system or network performance. The utility is available on Microsoft's website, http://www.microsoft.com/.
