Dave Murphy, DGL President & ITrain founder A new survey by Business Week magazine says the number of World Wide Web users has doubled to 40 million people from a year ago.

The poll by of 1,000 U.S. households found that 21 percent of adults, or 40 million people, browse the Web, up from 21.5 million a year ago.

An additional 12 percent use commercial online services, such as America Online or CompuServe, the study said.

The cyberspace gender gap is steadily shrinking. Women make up more than 40% of Internet users, up from 23% in September 1995.

The largest online age group is 40 somethings, who make up about a fourth of the cyberspace population. About half of Internet users are 40 or older, the study conducted by Baruch College and Louis Harris & Associates showed.

Internet users are also fairly affluent; more than 40% have household incomes exceeding $50,000 a year. Only 18% make $25,000 or less each year.

The study also found that 85% of Internet users categorize themselves as White. About 6% of users categorize themselves as Black and Hispanic, respectively.
