Dave Murphy, DGL President & ITrain founder Netscape Communications Corp. executives said they plan today to unveil the company's plans for enabling media to "push" information out to readers over the Internet.

The new product, previously code-named "Constellation," will automatically deliver information to users.

Bob Lisbonne, a marketing executive at Netscape, said the product, dubbed Netscape Netcaster, would be available in the upcoming Netscape Communicator when it is shipped later this quarter, months before Constellation was due to appear. He also said Netscape expected the push paradigm to catch on among both consumers and corporate customers alike.

Netscape's technology uses software from Palo Alto, California-based Marimba. Marimba's software enables media companies to deliver software and information to users tuned into a specific channel, like a television.

"We expect channels to proliferate -- there will be literally thousands of channels at the end of the quarter," said Lisbonne.

Netscape says content providers include Disney Co.'s ABC News and Time Warner Inc.'s Time Inc. New Media and CNNfn.

Netscape Netcaster will be available in a test preview version of Netscape Communicator within 30 days, and is due to be distributed as part of the $59 communicator package before the end of June.
