Cyrix Up by Dave Murphy ISSN 1535-3613
The new chip will allow the company to compete with Intel Corp. in the low-end market. Cyrix' other central processing unit chips already beat Intel's offerings at the high-end of the business and consumer markets. The MediaGX processor, built on a proprietary architecture, includes an I/O and memory controller, a graphics accelerator, and audio capability. Compaq and Cyrix had been in negotiations before about the chip, which took Cyrix three years to develop. For now, the new chip has no direct competition from Intel or Advanced Micro Devices Inc. Damar Group, Ltd. hasn't announced plans to implement the MediaGX chip in it's systems; however, an announcement is expected soon. DGL currently uses the Cyrix P166+ and P200+ chips as a faster alternative to Intel's Pentium-series chips in it's custom-designed DGL Gold systems.
