Microsoft has released the beta version of Internet Explorer 3.0 for Windows 3.x.
This product is important because of the large installed based of Windows 3.x users who will not or are not able to upgrade to Window 95 or Window NT, on which the current Internet Explorer 3.0 operates. The 16-bit version of IE3.0 will support JavaScript and Visual Basic Script, as well as Netscape Navigator plug-ins. The Netscape plug-ins, add-on software programs that enhance the functionality of the browser and perform specific operations such as allow multimedia, audio, and video applications to be displayed, have given Netscape Communications a significant advantage in the Netscape vs. Internet Explorer competition. By accepting NS plug-ins, Microsoft has made a step toward leveling the playing field. IE3.0 also includes a SMTP (Simple Mail Transport Protocol) and POP3 Internet email client and the new Internet Connection Wizard. The Wizard lets novice Internet users walk through the steps of finding and connecting with a local ISP (Internet Service Provider). The final release of the IE3.0 16-bit browser is expected before the end of the year.
