Windows 95 Scandisk & Defrag Commands

We have found a few cautions to share after installing Windows 95 throughout our organization.
Once the Win95 operating system has been installed on a computer’s hard drive, do not run the DOS chkdsk program from either a DOS window or the DOS prompt. The chkdsk program can cripple the file allocation table entries of the Win95 disk management system causing files to be lost or damaged.
Win95 includes the program scandskw that is executed from within Win95 by clicking Start | Run, typing scandskw, and clicking OK. This Win95 version of ScanDisk can correct file table anomalies and other disk aberrations.
The DOS program defrag should not be executed from the DOS prompt, instead run the new Win95 version from the Start | Run command line. The program name is still defrag.
It’s important to scan your hard drives and defragment their files at least once each week. This will minimize potential data lose and ensure optimal performance when retrieving files or loading application programs.
If your computer locks up or the power is cut off while Win95 is operating, allow Win95 to reload normally and then return to the DOS prompt through the Start | Shut Down process. Once at the DOS Prompt, delete all files in the system’s temporary directory, i.e. C:\TEMP or C:\WINDOWS\TEMP.
